Huasco River Basin (Chile)

Hydrology

Santa Juana Dam is the main regulating water structure in the basin, increasing irrigation security for downstream users. Since the beginning of its operation in September 1997, it shows varying storage volumes from 80 million m³ to 180 million m³. On 27th of January, volume depleted to 65 million m³, which is 55 million m³ below the historical mean. The dam also functions as the main water structure to prevent water scarcity in the 3rd and 4th hydrological section of the river. Scarcity will only affect these sections, once dam water levels are completely degraded and river water availability cannot suffice demand (Guitierrez, 2012).

Groundwater resources are mainly located after Santa Juana Dam, and are accessed by a total of 38 authorized wells that provide maximum flow of 1.033,5 L/s (Núnez & Cortés, 2011). Another characteristic of the valley is the filtration of surface water after Vallenar, leaving the river bed relatively dry, followed by a surge towards Freirina, which is caused by very high permeability of soils in this section (Núnez & Cortés, 2011).
